Varekai takes place in a post-apocalyptic time when much of the world has been ecologically devastated and left to utter ruin. Most humans, and few they are, live in poverty, reverting to a nomadic lifestyle, as worldly possessions are meaningless and survival is everything. The human race no longer reigns with supremacy, for wars and technology eroded away the existence they so sought after, and eventually became their demise. A legend is told in the "Book of the Moon" that wolves are mystical beings who came to the world from a place called Rakuen (Paradise), at the dawn of time. It is also said that, in the future, wolves will find a way to return to paradise and in doing so, bring about the end of the world. This legend is difficult for most to believe though, because wolves were thought to have been hunted to extinction nearly 200 years ago. Some wolves have survived though, for they had been coexisting with humans right under their noses. The wolves have a way of presenting themselves as being human to other humans, thus they can blend into human society with relatively little notice. This ability is in no way shape-shifting, it is a mental trick, an illusion.
It is also important to note that in the legend, wolves were set upon the land by Mother Earth to help human beings because humans were once lowly creatures that were prey for the demons and monsters that plagued the world at the dawn of time. Once the wolves and humans defeated the monsters, sending them back into the dark flames from whence they came, they created humanity; the structure of human society that would flourish for thousands of years, from a part of themselves, and taught them everything they know. The wolves then kept watch over the humans from afar, and didn't become involved in their affairs. Certain wolves, on the other hand, took on human form and stayed in that form for years. Eventually, they were no longer able to transform back into their wolf forms and became human permanently.
Years have passed, and the legends of old have begun to be forgotten. Still humanity trudges through the aftermath of their own destruction, perhaps never to regain what they once had. For the wilderness has reclaimed the planet, conquering pavement and decimating buildings until no longer can the rubble of the world once known be seen. A new world has been born, one of chaos, one belonging to the wolves. This is a place far from the leer of any human eye, set deep into now uncharted lands rules by mother earth. Humans are now the object of legends, and yet Paradise... there are some who remember the tale... There are some who would seek it until their dieing day. We are the children of the moon, and these are the pages of our saga.
